Haou Airen

Seen: completely

Last Updated: Oct 26, 2017

4.50 (moderate) Although Haou Airen is slightly more realistic than Mayu Shinjo's other works, it still suffers from a lot of clichés and heavy-handedness, requiring HEAVY suspension of disbelief and a love for pushy, mentally abusive male leads. Unsurprisingly, female protagonist Kurumi is as dumb, irrational and spineless as any other Mayu Shinjo lead, and all the hot guys still want to pork her. The art is clean and the characters attractive (especially the guys), but that still doesn't redeem this trainwreck. This manga felt like reading about a domestic abuse victim who recognizes herself as such and STILL makes excuses for the abuser. Urgh, avoid unless you like to torture yourself — and not in the good way.

8.50 (very good) Pretty good series, with lots of action, comedy and a little bit of ecchi that, fortunately, does not detract from the plot. What I enjoyed most about it were the characters: there are lots and of the most diverse kind and it really helps push the plot along. And even though it devolves into slapstick, the end returns to the gritty atmosphere of the beginning and more than makes up for what was done along the way. The art is great and the characters lovable, which make this a must read (at least in my opinion!)

9.00 (very good) Well damn, this is Harry Potter we're talking about, not like it needs any explanation! Growing up with it, it was and still remains a series that always sucks me in at the drop of a hat, and it takes surprisingly little time to read all the books again. Give it a chance and you honestly won't be disappointed.

7.50 (good) When I watched this I had an idea of what I was about to see, so I wasn't too disappointed. Seeing as this is in the "harem" genre, there's a lot of fanservice and slapstick. The situations aren't particularly believable either, so I'd say this is good if you just want to turn your brain off.

7.75 (good) Anime meets zombies! Oh, and a truckload of T&A. My favorite part about this is the fact that the author takes this manga seriously; don't get me wrong, there's still a lot of humor, but the characters are no longer as obscenely stupid as those we usually see in the zombie subgenre. Only thing that ultimately made me give this up is the excessive use of ecchi; I don't mind when there's a lot of it, but watermelon boobs are something I just can't suspend my disbelief on.

9.00 (very good) It's a manga that has to be read and enjoyed slowly. There's something to ponder in every page, from the expressions on the characters' faces (either normal or exaggerated) to sentences that are in no way empty or filler. To put it simply, every sentence has a part in the story and characterization, none is devoid of sense or used as a simple placeholder.

Thanks to Inio Asano's superb storytelling, you'll probably end up with different opinions on the characters, than the ones you started out with. And that's a good thing; it helps remind the reader that people aren't defined just by a single personality trait or (more importantly) through a single point of view. Every character presents themselves as the "hero" of their story and is at the same time presented through the eyes of other characters.

Go read it.

6.50 (above average) It was...decent. The art style really played on that bishie side of yaoi (the uke sometimes looked like a girl), but it isn't ugly or bothersome. The story's been done before, so this only ranks as a mediocre read at best. It's not disappointing per se, just don't go in expecting something amazing.

7.25 (above average) You need some patience when reading this, as the plot takes its time to appear; it's quite a "calm" manga which focuses more on the (pretty unconventional) characters. Overall, it's not bad but it isn't amazing either.

9.00 (very good) A common shoujo plot is "older guy falls in love with younger girl", but what about stories where the girl is older than the guy? Much older, in fact. You're not going to find many of those around. In this story, working woman Naoko falls in love with high school student Ouji. Troublesome circumstances ensue, dealing mostly with the two learning to accept each other and make peace with their differences; Naoko isn't always mature, just like Ouji isn't necessarily naive. And that's the beauty of it: they are both flawed people, yet somehow make it work after a lot of screaming, arguing and low blows both verbal and physical (mostly delivered by Naoko). It's a series I enjoy re-reading from time to time; the beautiful art and Yoshihara's humor never lose their charm.

Kaitou Game

6.50 (above average) It's not too different from Ryou Takagi's other mangas: art-wise, we have the overly cutesy and feminine uke (Shiki) and the tall, dark and handsome seme (Seomi). While interesting in the first chapter, they seemed to make an 180-degree heel turn after that, with Shiki turning into a helpless crybaby and Seomi into a lovestruck "I live only for my lover" cliché. I'd say the first chapter is the best; after the family plot is resolved, the manga goes into "lovey dovey couple" territory and the rest didn't hold my interest as much. All in all, I'd recommend it if you're new to Ryou Takagi: you'll get a taste of her style and artwork and you'll probably end up liking it more than I did after reading more of her works. The artwork is decent and clean, in spite of the characters looking too stereotypical (cool, mature seme; overly emotional, doe-eyed uke) at times.

7.50 (good) I found this quite entertaining, even though it's more slowly paced than most yaoi out there. I liked seeing Takashi and Sei together and especially watching the arguments that arose because of their insecurities concerning their relationship. The art is clean and pleasant to look at, as is Kai Asou's usual work. Overall, this is pretty good if you just want to read something calm but still funny and heart-warming.

8.00 (good) A solid anime series that I wholeheartedly recommend to shoujo fans and not only. Unlike other shows, the cuteness in this doesn't get in the way of the plot and things progress quite nicely. The characters have depth and the performances are simply mesmerizing (though they could've gone easier on the slow-mo). Some episodes may feel drawn out, but the payoff is more than worth it.

8.75 (very good) At first sight this may seem like a boring anime, but there's a lot more to it than meets the eye. Sure, it doesn't exactly pump out action left and right - its pacing is actually quite slow -, but at no point did I feel like it was drawn out. Despite it being short, the characters are well fleshed out and relatable, and the animation beautiful and seamless. Highly recommended if you want to kick back and relax.

7.00 (above average) Good plot, for a hentai anime, though the characters somewhat leave to be desired and their actions may leave you scratching your head at times. The mystery of what goes on at the shrine is what keeps this going - well, you know, aside from the bonking -, and it's interesting to see how many people are involved and what their role is. Carnelian's artwork is good as usual, though the animation looks a bit dated nowadays. The music is solid, and does a good job of setting the mood.

5.75 (average) This...is a difficult series for me to review. At first I utterly hated it because it could easily pass for a rape drama if it weren't labeled a comedy, then I gave it another shot. While my opinion of it did get better, I'm still not too impressed with it. Fuuta's selfishness got on my nerves a lot, as well as "Doormat" Tooru's submissiveness and drastic personality change. I know it's yaoi, but I'd still like SOME realism in it and not just forced couples that have no reason to stay together.

8.00 (good) One of Shin Mizukami's best, in my opinion. There are many turns to the story and I liked how "cruel" she could be to her characters: there's no sugarcoating most of the situations here and the sex is quite graphic and with no romance involved most of the time. Beautiful art, though as with all of Shin Mizukami's works, it takes getting used to.

8.00 (good) Cute story, with a dash of drama and a lot of good art. The pace is decent and the only tension stems from the relationship between Yousuke and Kazuhiro; the background, a mountain village, is quite peaceful and serves as a good setting for the relationship, what with the lack of focus on other "urban" elements.

Focuses more on the romance rather than sex and there's a fair share of drama as well, but it's not hard to sit through; thankfully, we don't spend entire chapters clearing up misunderstandings. The art is clean and pleasant to look at, no complaints there. All in all, it's a decent series.

9.00 (very good) Definitely something different from all the stereotypical yaoi out there. It's mostly funny but the author knows how to tug at your heartstrings when necessary. However, it does have moments where it feels drawn out and it looks like we're going around in circles, which are usually saved by sex scenes (cynical, I know). It's still a pretty good read though, recommended for every yaoi fan.
Update: loved the ending, tied things up quite nicely.

Kouya no Seifukuou

Last Updated: Sep 28, 2012

6.00 (average) Not bad, but could have definitely benefited from more character development, as most characters seem one-dimensional: you can find the smug seme and the feisty-but-fragile uke in almost all the chapters, but moreso in "The Conquest King of a Wasteland" and "The Love Call to the Master"; the latter is also the shortest chapter (excluding "Paradise") and the most lackluster one in terms of characters and smexiness (kinda leaves you hanging).

The art is what you'd expect from Shinano Oumi; she seems to have four character templates that she uses again and again, and it shows. You either have Smug Seme, Doormat Uke, Love Rival or Stubborn Uke to choose from, so, aside from varying hairstyles, you'd have a difficult time telling all the similar characters apart.

All in all, an average read. Not something to get overly excited over but not bad enough to pass up either. Good for a quick fix, if you're just looking for smex and minimal story, just enough for it not to be a PWP.

9.00 (very good) Smut-wise, I think this is one of the best series I've ever read. To be fair, it never tries to be deep, and I'd say it succeeds at what it's supposed to be: yaoi with the bare minimum amount of plot. Shingo and Reiichi went around in circles a lot of the time when it came to their feelings for each other, which annoyed me somewhat and is the reason for the 1 point deduction. The art is great, and the werecat backstory is certainly a neat angle. Definitely recommended if you're looking for very pretty smut, not so much if you want a deep plot with realistic characters.

4.50 (moderate) A manga I loved at the time I read, now not at all. It's pretty typical for the shoujo genre, but its biggest problem is the author throwing plot points left and right and not spending enough time on actually detailing them. The end feels rushed and too convenient. Character-wise, everyone is some sort of shoujo stereotype and the side characters are more interesting that the main ones. Oh, and you'd be completely justified in slapping Hiyoko silly, as it's her weird actions and reactions that lead to most of the strange situations. She is a very weak lead and arguably a Mary Sue, what with every male she meets wanting to rape her (I'm not even joking here).

Love Witch

Last Updated: Feb 03, 2015

5.75 (average) It's...a bit on the iffy side. On one hand, the basic idea and mythology are pretty intriguing and kept me interested enough to finish the series - or at least what's available, considering the fact that it was dropped right when it seemed to be picking up the pace (3 chapters in). There are some parts that don't really work, relating to Yuu and Ai (the twins) - specifically, the way their relationship changes. Without giving spoilers, it seemed very farfetched and left a bad taste in my mouth. Ai already had enough motivation to become a better witch, so why introduce that tired cliché?

The art is OK, if a bit flowery. Naoko really doesn't like connecting outlines, apparently. Sometimes the heavy use of screentones gets in the way and details are difficult to make out.

Overall it was a fairly basic shoujo story, and I found Ai's sisters (especially Hoshi) and her aunt much more interesting than Ai herself. If anything, I'd recommend skipping the main story and reading the "Sister Witch" oneshot directly; things are explained at the beginning so you won't miss out on anything. The oneshot has better pacing and more interesting characters and situations than the main story, in my opinion.

Lover's Position

8.00 (good) Liked it very much, there was a lot of emotion and the characters behaved more maturely (well, as mature as the "misunderstanding" yaoi subgenre can be) than in other works. Beautiful art, as expected from Masara Minase, though my complaint is that the characters look very similar, even though it's not that easy to mix them up. Out of the two stories, my favorite was the second, for the more complicated and twisty plot.

Lovers in the Night

7.50 (good) Cute and interesting - two adjectives I hate to use, but there's really no other way to describe this -, though it seems that almost all of Fumi Yoshinaga's mangas take place around the same time period (18th century). The art is good and clean: the characters are attractive and pleasant to look at, albeit a bit bland sometimes. I have a soft spot for the chibi faces, on the other hand, they're very expressive!
Recommended to those who like romance in their yaoi: cute couple interactions and hot sex scenes!

6.50 (above average) This is a relatively quiet story; there aren't any fast-paced events and the mangaka chose to focus on the characters instead. It's mainly a drama but there are still bits and pieces of comic relief here and there (especially Ryouichi's driving); I was surprised at how serious things got when characters discussed their future and it was refreshing to see some insecurity since most manga characters have their lives all planned out. Ultimately, it's...normal. Not too bad and not too good either.

8.25 (good) It's pretty good; I admit at first I was skeptical about the plot, but I was surprised how quickly it drew me in. Then again, I have a soft spot for vampires. The art's great if you can get past Kaya's HUGE DOE EYES. She can be grating at times, with her "perfect secretary but actually tortured inside" attitude, and Kyouhei's an ass 95% of the time; they truly deserve each other, lol.

It's pretty smutty, at least later on as Kyouhei and Kaya's relationship progresses, but there's also some humor thrown in (Kaya's inner reactions to Kyouhei's debauchery). All in all, it was a fun read. Kaya's isn't mopey ALL the time and she's very capable and hard-working, so it's not like she's kept around as decoration; and Kyouhei is an asshole I grew to like (and he's possibly more entertaining to observe than Kaya). Must read if you're a fan of josei, office romances and/or vampires!

8.25 (good) Very cute! Then again, I AM a big Saika Kunieda fan, so I may be a bit biased. Either way, I loved the humor and "humanity" in this; Jun and Yamaguchi are adorable whenever they interact, especially because they're both idiots (as acknowledged by themselves). The art takes a bit of getting used to since it's quite simple-looking most of the time but ultimately doesn't disappoint. All in all, highly recommended if you want good yaoi, plot and romance all in one!

Mirai no Kioku

Last Updated: Sep 10, 2016

9.50 (excellent) A series I love to re-read from time to time, simply because it's that good. In true Saika Kunieda fashion, there are both funny and serious moments and it's a real treat watching the characters react to them. I feel this is the strong part of the manga, namely the real issues and believable reactions to them. The characters themselves are a pleasure to follow - if anything, it's fun to see Kento and Akira act all awkward around each other and get into silly arguments over trivial matters. Even the secondary characters (Kento's grandparents, Akira's mom) are well developed and likeable. Overall, this is a must read if you are a fan of quieter mangas and those that rely more on romance than sex, but that doesn't mean there's no sex at all; the sex scenes are very well and tastefully rendered. So, if you like romance, a certain realism and good sex scenes, don't miss this one.

7.00 (above average) Alright, this is definitely guilty pleasure material. The plot sounds like an old Bond movie and is ultimately so contrived that it should only be considered a pretext for the romance. The twist is fairly predictable and you can see the ending a mile away. The characters don't have much going for them either, they all pretty much follow the types Masara always uses in her works. All in all, don't go into this thinking you'll find something deep and you won't be disappointed.

6.50 (above average) This had a lot of potential but in the end it all went down the drain: the story felt forced and the supernatural aspect was explained much too late (last chapter) for it to make much sense overall - if anything, I think the manga could do well without it and would be a much better character study. Like this, it felt as if the mangaka tried to switch gears at the last moment, just to get a more memorable ending.
