Tomie

Seen: completely

Last Updated: Oct 29, 2017

7.75 (good) Just when you think you've got Tomie figured out and are rid of her, she pops up again to torment more unfortunate people. She's a force you just can't win against, and this is what made me continue reading; sometimes evil needs to win to balance things out. And since it's Junji Ito, you already have an idea of his style even if you haven't read any of his works. Highly recommended if you're craving some genuine horror.

Daily Lives of High School Boys

7.75 (good) DKN is a collection of shorts about, well, high school boys (and girls!) and what they do, with slice-of-life anime tropes employed and lampshaded left and right. The humor is hit or miss; you'll find some stories more funny than others, and some I felt were only included to fulfill the running time requirement. The characters do stupid stuff all the time and it's refreshing to watch them just BE KIDS and using their imagination, as opposed to a lot of anime which pile on the drama and grittiness. The art is decent, and some characters have surprisingly deep voices! There's not a lot of continuity, so it's a good anime to watch if you don't want to think too hard about plot or stuff like that.

7.50 (good) One of the better hentai series, because it actually tries to present a plot — just keep in mind this IS hentai, and don't go in expecting a lot of depth. For the most part it works and some episodes are genuinely creepy. There's also the chance that you'll encounter the kink of your choice, as there are plenty of options explored here. The animation is average and sometimes sloppy, but nonetheless visually pleasing.

7.50 (good) When I watched this I had an idea of what I was about to see, so I wasn't too disappointed. Seeing as this is in the "harem" genre, there's a lot of fanservice and slapstick. The situations aren't particularly believable either, so I'd say this is good if you just want to turn your brain off.

7.50 (good) I found this quite entertaining, even though it's more slowly paced than most yaoi out there. I liked seeing Takashi and Sei together and especially watching the arguments that arose because of their insecurities concerning their relationship. The art is clean and pleasant to look at, as is Kai Asou's usual work. Overall, this is pretty good if you just want to read something calm but still funny and heart-warming.

7.50 (good) It was pretty good for a light read, I enjoyed the characters and the art even though sometimes the ukes had BIG doe eyes. The plot's not really that original but it's passable in the end; the relationships are a highlight of this and, as a finishing touch, I admit that I liked the twist of chapter 5 - you don't see this too often in yaoi :)

Hana ni Arashi

7.50 (good) Let's check off a few clichés: seemingly ordinary girl protagonist, with a quirk that gets her in trouble, is chased by a filthy rich guy who wants to bon- I mean marry her. Of course there's a love triangle at some point. In spite of this, it's entertaining and funny, and everyone is fully aware of how ridiculous most of the situations are: Riko is a damn superhero able to jump from tall buildings and moving cars without a scratch, and Ran is a ruthless filthy rich dude who has nothing better to do than chase her. But the story is surprisingly heartwarming when the two share the occasional serious moment. After all the craziness, them getting together for real actually seems believable, once they actually sit down and bond. The art is clean and pretty to look at, so no complaints there. It's actually a decent story overall, if you enjoy the "guy sweeps the girl off her feet, whether she wants to or not" genre.

7.50 (good) Cute and interesting - two adjectives I hate to use, but there's really no other way to describe this -, though it seems that almost all of Fumi Yoshinaga's mangas take place around the same time period (18th century). The art is good and clean: the characters are attractive and pleasant to look at, albeit a bit bland sometimes. I have a soft spot for the chibi faces, on the other hand, they're very expressive!
Recommended to those who like romance in their yaoi: cute couple interactions and hot sex scenes!

Urahara to Jirenma

Last Updated: Oct 29, 2017

7.50 (good) It's cute, and always neat to see a main couple with a shorter seme and taller, less confident uke — not to mention the lack of questionable consent. There's really not much to say about this, if you're familiar with Naono's works this isn't a great departure from her usual stuff. Recommended if you're looking for more down-to-earth yaoi.

Royal Fiancé

Last Updated: Oct 29, 2017

7.50 (good) this story is absolutely unrealistic, with a HEAVY dose of real non-con, misunderstandings and stupid decisions. The plot is as cliché as they come, with a naive, poor high school boy dragged into an arranged marriage with the prince of a foreign country. The art is very flowery and reflects the characters' personalities: the typical bishie seme and the doe-eyed uke who doesn't dare raise his voice against his "master". It could've been quite an interesting plot despite it being done before, but in the end it fell into mediocrity. Still, high rating because I enjoy seeing doormat ukes being tormented when they are too pure (read: stupid) to speak up!

Peter Pan Syndrome

Last Updated: Jan 12, 2013

7.50 (good) It's a cute story and an interesting take on the Peter Pan mythos, with a female lead and little reference to PP (aside from the nature of Kahoko's powers and some small hints I won't give away). Kahoko herself is quite a strong and independent lead for a 12-year-old and I wasn't bored at all when reading about her. The other main characters, Yuuro and Kyouri, are quite dull in comparison, though, and not nearly as well-rounded as her character is.

The art's also what you'd expect from shoujo, with characters sporting huge, bright eyes and even bigger smiles most of the time; there are a lot of sparkly screentones as well, which tired my eyes after a while, but the "main" art is generally clean. The only complaint I have in regards to the art is that absolutely all the characters look very young (pre-teenish), even the adults (Kahoko's dad looks like he could be her classmate!).

Nekrateholic

Last Updated: Sep 20, 2011

7.25 (above average) Vampire yaoi is difficult to find. Vampire yaoi with a good, coherent plot is even harder to find. What first convinced me to read Nekrateholic was the art, which can be both gorgeous and funny when need be (though I can see how others might not find it very appealing). Secondly, the characters are well-balanced and fleshed out. Thirdly, the plot, while not something spectacular, is well structured and coherent; while I feel it had the potential to go on longer, I commend the author for stopping at one volume. It's pretty good for a light read, even though there were hints of something more complex going on behind the scenes.

Wild Rock

Last Updated: Sep 20, 2011

7.25 (above average) Definitely a good introduction to yaoi. While it does have 2-3 more risque scenes, the majority of it is tame and mainly focuses on romance rather than sex. The main characters are the stereotypical hardass seme and soft uke, but this doesn't mean the manga is boring. If anything, its fault is its length, as it could have been longer to allow the characters to be more fleshed out and avoid stereotypes. However, it's good for a quick fix and doesn't require too much thinking about, since it's fairly straightforward.

7.25 (above average) You need some patience when reading this, as the plot takes its time to appear; it's quite a "calm" manga which focuses more on the (pretty unconventional) characters. Overall, it's not bad but it isn't amazing either.

7.25 (above average) Has quite a slow start and the usual misunderstanding caused by lack of communication, but it picks up in the end. If anything, it's a light read and the only real fault that I could find with it was that Enji was so expressionless while Mizuho was over the top sometimes. There's >some< chemistry there, but not enough to warrant a "squee!" from me ^^"

7.00 (above average) Good plot, for a hentai anime, though the characters somewhat leave to be desired and their actions may leave you scratching your head at times. The mystery of what goes on at the shrine is what keeps this going - well, you know, aside from the bonking -, and it's interesting to see how many people are involved and what their role is. Carnelian's artwork is good as usual, though the animation looks a bit dated nowadays. The music is solid, and does a good job of setting the mood.

7.00 (above average) Alright, this is definitely guilty pleasure material. The plot sounds like an old Bond movie and is ultimately so contrived that it should only be considered a pretext for the romance. The twist is fairly predictable and you can see the ending a mile away. The characters don't have much going for them either, they all pretty much follow the types Masara always uses in her works. All in all, don't go into this thinking you'll find something deep and you won't be disappointed.

7.00 (above average) Seemed a bit rushed, so there wasn't too much time to flesh out the characters. Stuff happens and you don't really get to see the consequences; the characters tell you what happens instead (yay for forced exposition). The characters themselves feel like cardboard cutouts at times and there's not much development in terms of their personalities. The art is good, though, just like I'm used to seeing from Masara Minase. I recommend it because it's not bad per se, just mediocre, and only a oneshot, so it doesn't require much time and concentration.

7.00 (above average) If you're ever in the mood for a short, slightly nonsensical series, this is the one for you. The only downside is Yoshiko herself and how shouty she is, making you empathize with Akkun from the bottom of your heart. The gags are funny, though the level of Yoshiko's insanity does grate on one's nerves a LOT. Aside from Yoshiko, the other characters are good at carrying what little story there is, and some - Akkun and Yoshiko's mother in particular - have some very funny moments.

6.75 (above average) This is pretty good for a shoujo series, though by no means groundbreaking. Its only defect is the length, I felt it could have gone on longer and explained more of the characters' pasts (especially the side characters). It felt too short and condensed, in the end. I liked Kiyo though, she's a decent female lead who stands up for herself.

Aisuru Hito

6.75 (above average) While not Yoshihara's best manga, it was still a pretty fun read. Sakiko's stalker-ish behvaior raises some eyebrows and can get old pretty fast, not to mention her constant attempts to assault Chifuyu. Despite this, the manga does have some serious moments of bonding between characters and Sakiko's not always as stupid as she looks/behaves. The art is alright, clean lines and attractive characters, though you'd be hard-pressed to tell the males apart by face only, since they're almost carbon-copy. Only the females can be told apart, and even then it's only due to their hairstyles. Overall, it's good as a light read, provided you have the patience to put up with Sakiko's antics and lack of common sense.

Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon

Last Updated: Oct 25, 2017

6.75 (above average) The ultimate shoujo series. Essays can be written about this, so I'll keep it short: the manga is more serious than the anime and surprisingly sad. The anime, while more popular, suffers heavily from its episodic, monster-of-the-week nature. The characters are well fleshed out, though, and quite relatable. I dropped BSSM Crystal, though, because it's boring as sin.

6.75 (above average) It's...OK. While the premise is highly questionable — "victim falls in love with rapist" —, it's not presented in a serious manner and instead pushed aside in order to focus on the two main characters and their relationship; there's not much character development to speak of, and Narumi's lack of emotion got boring fast. The art is clean, but the characters sometimes look too much like one another, sans hair color (which, fortunately, differs); it's not "normal", overly effeminate art, though the characters arguably go into bishounen territory, but it does take some getting used to if you're not accustomed to lanky, expressionless boys. Overall, it's mediocre; if you're offended by rape fantasies, I'd recommend against reading it, but if that's your kink, you may find reading it worthwhile.

Seto no Hanayome

6.50 (above average) It was fun in the beginning, but I had to give up on this after a while: too repetitive and the plot feels like it's going nowhere. The animation was clean but there were too many things going on and it ultimately devolved into a typical harem situation (which is a shame, as it had potential). The plot can get quite episodic at times, there are a lot of underdeveloped characters and the slapstick gets old fast.

6.50 (above average) It was...decent. The art style really played on that bishie side of yaoi (the uke sometimes looked like a girl), but it isn't ugly or bothersome. The story's been done before, so this only ranks as a mediocre read at best. It's not disappointing per se, just don't go in expecting something amazing.

6.50 (above average) I've read this 3-4 times and, for some reason, it still doesn't stand out from the mass of other yaoi. I guess Kurokawa and Tomoe had chemistry but were also utterly unremarkable as the lead couple; if anything, the side characters — Isogai and Reiko in particular — steal the show easily every time. For all its questionable ethics, the sequel, Koisuru Boukun, is superior IMO.

Makeinu no Nandemoya

Last Updated: Sep 10, 2016

6.50 (above average) This is a relatively quiet story; there aren't any fast-paced events and the mangaka chose to focus on the characters instead. It's mainly a drama but there are still bits and pieces of comic relief here and there (especially Ryouichi's driving); I was surprised at how serious things got when characters discussed their future and it was refreshing to see some insecurity since most manga characters have their lives all planned out. Ultimately, it's...normal. Not too bad and not too good either.

6.50 (above average) This is a rare case where I loved the side characters more than the main ones, though it's all a matter of preference in the end. The mythological references and the action scenes are good, though I did want the mythology to be expanded more and maybe a more gradual introduction of the characters. As it is, the story feels rushed and crowded; perhaps it would have been better suited for a longer series instead of a single volume and a oneshot. The art is well done, but that's to be expected since it's Naono after all.

6.50 (above average) This had a lot of potential but in the end it all went down the drain: the story felt forced and the supernatural aspect was explained much too late (last chapter) for it to make much sense overall - if anything, I think the manga could do well without it and would be a much better character study. Like this, it felt as if the mangaka tried to switch gears at the last moment, just to get a more memorable ending.

6.50 (above average) It's not too different from Ryou Takagi's other mangas: art-wise, we have the overly cutesy and feminine uke (Shiki) and the tall, dark and handsome seme (Seomi). While interesting in the first chapter, they seemed to make an 180-degree heel turn after that, with Shiki turning into a helpless crybaby and Seomi into a lovestruck "I live only for my lover" cliché. I'd say the first chapter is the best; after the family plot is resolved, the manga goes into "lovey dovey couple" territory and the rest didn't hold my interest as much. All in all, I'd recommend it if you're new to Ryou Takagi: you'll get a taste of her style and artwork and you'll probably end up liking it more than I did after reading more of her works. The artwork is decent and clean, in spite of the characters looking too stereotypical (cool, mature seme; overly emotional, doe-eyed uke) at times.

6.25 (average) Even though I'm normally a fan of Kai Asou's works, this one didn't have the same feel as her others. I didn't really feel any connection to the characters and had to wait a lot for the payoff because most of the manga is spent analyzing and discussing rather than showing or moving the plot along. It was nice to see the lover's point of view and it certainly gave the story a different angle, but there's not much going for it in the end. Pretty average.

6.25 (average) Can't say I was very impressed by this: the story is relatively slow-paced and sometimes things got a bit confusing. What really bothered me was the lack of any "real" consequences to the merman's choice like in the original Little Mermaid story; there was no obstacle to overcome if Nize decided to stay with Leonhart, which in turn meant no tension at all. To be fair, it's mediocre; the only upside to this is the art, but even that takes getting used to.

6.00 (average) Not one of my favorites or even among the ones I'd like to re-read in the future. My main gripe with this is the unrealistic relationship between Hisashi and Shouta; sure, it's yaoi, and I don't dislike oblivious or possessive characters, but I felt the two had zero chemistry. There are quite a lot of WTF moments and even though the words are censored, it doesn't take a lot of imagination to figure out what's going on. The bad points outweigh the good ones, though, and even the (unrelated) oneshot at the end was more interesting than the main story.

Kouya no Seifukuou

6.00 (average) Not bad, but could have definitely benefited from more character development, as most characters seem one-dimensional: you can find the smug seme and the feisty-but-fragile uke in almost all the chapters, but moreso in "The Conquest King of a Wasteland" and "The Love Call to the Master"; the latter is also the shortest chapter (excluding "Paradise") and the most lackluster one in terms of characters and smexiness (kinda leaves you hanging).

The art is what you'd expect from Shinano Oumi; she seems to have four character templates that she uses again and again, and it shows. You either have Smug Seme, Doormat Uke, Love Rival or Stubborn Uke to choose from, so, aside from varying hairstyles, you'd have a difficult time telling all the similar characters apart.

All in all, an average read. Not something to get overly excited over but not bad enough to pass up either. Good for a quick fix, if you're just looking for smex and minimal story, just enough for it not to be a PWP.

5.75 (average) This series is either hit or miss; for me, it was a miss. First, the art was confusing, since most of the time I couldn't figure out who was who because everyone looked the same; it wasn't particularly clean either. Second, the characters are as stereotypical as they come; I didn't feel any connection to them and, frankly, couldn't care less about what happened to them. Third, the plot brings nothing new to the table; love triangles are OK the first hundred times, but after that I can no longer stomach another (badly executed) one. Furthermore, I felt like there was no resolution or clear direction and that this could turn into another 100-volume/episode series. I don't plan on continuing this, and I feel I've given it a fair shot to impress me for 40+ chapters and half a season.

While my opinion of it did get better, I'm still not too impressed with it. Fuuta's selfishness got on my nerves a lot, as well as "Doormat" Tooru's submissiveness and drastic personality change. I know it's yaoi, but I'd still like SOME realism in it and not just forced couples that have no reason to stay together.
